PROJECTS
Parallel to the Mahler Festival in the Gewandhaus, KLASSIK underground presented the “Wunderhorn Festival” in the neighbouring underground Moritzbastei Club in May 2023. The Wunderhorn Festival concerts combined recitation of folk poems from Des Knaben Wunderhorn (“The Boy’s Magic Horn”) with live music performance featuring musicians from the Gewandhaus Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Munich Philharmonic. The KLASSIK underground Wunderhorn Festival is the subject of a documentary film to be released in 2024.
KLASSIK underground created the exclusively online concert series “Resonate” in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut, the Karajan Institute and Symmetrica Creative Technology in 2021-22 as part of the 70th anniversary of the Goethe-Institut. In each Resonate performance, artists from the Leipzig International Art Programme created a visual response to the live music performance by musicians of the Gewandhaus Orchestra.
In 2021 KLASSIK underground produced 3 concert films based on Dante’s “Divina Commedia” featuring musicians of the Gewandhaus Orchestra and specially created visuals by Tilo Baumgärtel inspired by William Blake’s Divina Commedia illustrations. These films were presented in German cinema and in Australia by the Italian Cultural Institute.
